When Debra Nakatomi and Dianne Fukami set off to produce a documentary about the survivors of the tragic triple disaster in the Tohoku region of Japan in March 2011, they had no idea it would become a cultural odyssey that held personal significance for them.
The intent was to show how funding raised by Japanese American non-profit organizations in the United States were helping Tohoku survivors in the rebuilding and recovery of Japan.
What they ended up with were stories of resilience and strength, a deeper understanding of Japanese traditional values, and an opportunity to witness deep and enduring connections between Americans of Japanese ancestry and the people of Tohoku, Japan. The documentary is directed by Dianne Fukami and Eli Olson.
